This month the focus in on leading by example.  I think you can agree that the world needs more true leaders.  People that are worth following not because they have a title but because they set a high standard for others by how they live each day.  This week is about the importance of being honest.

 Quote

"Honesty is more than not lying. It is truth-telling, truth-speaking, truth-living, and truth-loving." - James E. Faust

Honesty is an interesting subject.  I don't know of anyone that is honest 100% of the time, try as I might I know I slip up from time to time.  If you can catch yourself before making a little lie and choose the truth instead it will make it much easier to tell the truth when there is more at stake, like someone's feelings, your job, and more importantly being honest with yourself.  The first place to start is with being honest with yourself.

Today's Coaching Challenge

Where are you not be truthful with yourself in your daily life?  Do you tell yourself you are going to workout, get up earlier, eat healthier, etc. even though you aren't really committed to what you are saying?  Then you find yourself justifying your action or inaction for not following through.

When you do that with yourself it's going to be difficult to be honest with others.  Perhaps it feels more comfortable to say something you don't really mean than being honest.  I sometimes hear people talking about being "Brutally Honest" which usually causes pain for whoever is receiving the message even if it yourself.  I remember reading that Buddha said, "There is brutally and there is honesty, but there is never brutal honesty".  Just something to think about.

Action to take

Before complaining about how so many people lie, look inside first.  Take a few moments today to think about where you aren't being completely honest with yourself then go a little deeper and ask yourself why you might be hiding behind an untruth?  Once you know your reasoning you can work towards changing that before you start on the next thing.
